Kashi Vishwanath Temple: etiquette, dress code and darshan tips
Kashi Vishwanath is one of the twelve Jyotirlingas and the single most important temple in Varanasi, which also means it's one of the most tightly managed for security and crowd flow. Knowing the basics before you go makes the visit noticeably smoother.
What to wear
Modest clothing is expected โ shoulders and knees covered for both men and women. Leather items (belts, wallets, bags) are generally not allowed inside and are best left at your hotel rather than checked at the gate.
What you can't bring in
Mobile phones, cameras, and most electronics are not permitted inside the main sanctum area and must be deposited at a locker facility near the entrance. Bring minimal belongings โ a single small bag is easier to manage through security than a backpack.
Queues and timing
The general darshan queue moves fastest early morning, right after the temple opens, and again in early afternoon. Mondays, weekends and any Shiva-related festival date bring significantly longer waits โ sometimes several hours. A guide familiar with the current queue system and any special darshan options can meaningfully cut this wait.
Photography
Photography is not permitted inside the temple premises given the security setup โ this is enforced consistently, so it's not worth attempting to sneak a phone in.
The Kashi Vishwanath Corridor
The redeveloped corridor connecting the temple to the Ganga is worth walking slowly rather than rushing through โ it links the temple directly to the ghats, and is itself a fairly recent and significant piece of the city's layout.
Our tour packages include a guide who manages the queue timing and locker logistics, which is where most first-time visitors lose the most time unassisted.
