Devi TempleIn Sadar Bazar within Varanasi's Cantonment area — a very different urban setting from the old city's ghat-side lanes — Chandi Devi's temple is regarded locally as a powerful Shakti Peeth, with the Kashi Khand naming Chandika Devi as the last of seven Matrika goddesses described in its account.
Kashi Khand, Chapter 83, lists seven Matrika Devis involved in a story about restoring a young boy to life (detailed under the Veereshwar legend), with Chandika Devi named as the seventh and final figure in that account — connecting this temple to one of the text's more specific narrative episodes rather than a general devotional theme alone.
Separately, Kashi Khand, Chapter 70, references a powerful but unnamed goddess called Kaurmi Shakti; the 20th-century scholar Kedar Nath Vyas is credited with identifying this figure as Chandi Devi, an interpretive link that adds scholarly weight to the temple's claimed scriptural pedigree beyond the Chapter 83 account alone.
The temple's annual Saptami Aarti, held during Navratri, draws particularly large crowds on the belief that the chief priest visibly takes on the form of Kali Devi during the ceremony — one of the more striking and specific ritual claims attached to any single goddess shrine covered on this site.
Being situated in the Cantonment area, built up originally under British administration as a separate military and civil quarter, gives Chandi Devi's temple a noticeably different surrounding architecture and street layout from the dense, centuries-old lanes of the main temple district.
