Shiva TempleAlso at Sankata Ghat, alongside Vamadeveshwar, Vashishteshwar carries the name of Vashishtha, one of the Saptarishis (seven great sages) of Hindu tradition and a recurring figure across the Vedas, Puranas, and epics including the Ramayana.
Vashishtha appears across an enormous range of Hindu scripture, most famously as the royal sage (rajguru) to King Dasharatha and his sons in the Ramayana, and as the attributed author or source of several Vedic hymns — making him one of the most consequential sage-figures in the entire textual tradition.
A second possible site for this linga, across the Varuna river past the Varuna Sangam, is mentioned in some local accounts without a confirmed address, illustrating how oral tradition in Kashi sometimes preserves more than one claimed location for a single named shrine.
Sharing an address with Vamadeveshwar means Sankata Ghat offers a small cluster of named lingas alongside its namesake Sankata Devi temple, making this one of several efficient multi-shrine stops along the central riverfront.
